So when you see an image with a lot of blown highlights, that means it lacks dynamic range. If you have photos that are particularly dark in the shadows, you might be dealing with a camera that has low dynamic range.

Use a High Dynamic Range (HDR) Effect

In your photo editor, you can use the HDR effect to expand the dynamic range of your photos. This will help to add life to your blownout highlights. Be careful to not overdo the effect, or your images will have an unpleasant plastic look to them.

Use a Graduated Filter

A more targeted solution is to use a graduated filter. Layer a graduated filter over just the blownout part of the photo. Then, tone the shadows down using the slider in your photo editor.

Use a Radially Graduated Filter

If the blownout highlights are in the middle of the image, you can use a radially graduated filter. Add an adjustment layer and choose a radial gradient instead of a linear gradient. Drag the adjustment layer from the center of the image out to cover the overexposed portion. Adjust the exposure until the highlights are toned down.

Use a BlackandWhite Adjustment Layer

If you’re not satisfied with the results from your previous attempts, you can try converting the photo to black and white. Create a black and white adjustment layer. In the properties panel, activate the “Invert” option. Then, lower the opacity of the black and white adjustment layer to taste.

s have been waiting for news, looking specifically at what has been going on with Live Photos. With the release of iOS 11.1, Apple has introduced a new feature that allows you to trim Live Photos, much like you could with videos. The only strange thing about this update is that it’s a relatively small feature within iOS, and for some reason, it’s not mentioned in the iOS 11.1 release notes.

To trim a Live Photo, open the Photos app and find the Live Photo you want to edit. Tap the edit button and then tap the new Trim icon. Drag the yellow sliders at the bottom of the Live Photo to adjust the start and end points. You can also tap the middle slider to move the frame around. Once you’re satisfied, tap Trim and then Done.

While the feature is not groundbreaking, it’s nice to finally have the ability to trim Live Photos. There have been plenty of thirdparty apps in the App Store that have offered this ability, but it's always nice to have the option within iOS.
