but buyers don’t spend much time on the lower level with both stores there. “It’s almost like they’re robbing each other of sales,” he says. “When we first opened, the other store was very negative about us being here. As time went on, we were accepted.” The two now cooperate on special promotions and price matching to build траф? c in the mall. Sales keep growing, and the appliance store is now a respected part of the community. “We became a neighborhood store. Customers have become friends,” Hill says. “We’re the only local appliance store.” Hill believes that even in a slow economy, there will always be customers who want an experienced appliance salesperson to help them make an informed purchase. In a recent study by J.D. Power and Associates, “48 percent of new buyers were dissatisfied with the lack of help from sales representatives in electronics chains.” At Best Buy, for instance, commissionpaid salespeople are given quotas and are pushed to sell extended warranties and credit cards. This model often leads to “pushy” sales tactics that turn some buyers off. “It’s really di? cult to convince a customer to buy from you if you’re not able to spend the time with them,” says Hill. “Most of the time, by the time they get to us, they’ve been to several other stores.” They come to his store ready to buy, and have already done their research online or elsewhere. It’s an older clientele base than others, and they are looking for help in selecting an appliance. As a result, “We sell a lot of higherend brands that other stores don’t carry,” Hill says. “We specialize in brands that consumers would have di? culty finding elsewhere.” 113 As a consequence of the pandemic, “The supply chain has been the biggest challenge for us,” Hill says. “We can’t get appliances in.” At one point, his inventory was down by half. Customers are understanding, but some are waiting as long as eight weeks for appliances. The lack of inventory issues have forced the store to make a few changes. Hill recently expanded his countertop appliance selection, since that is typically more available. The store is also doing more work on repairs, which at one time was only about 5 percent of the business, and now is 25 percent. “It really saved us,” he says. As the economy improves, Hill believes things will turn around. “I’m optimistic for the next two years,” he says. “We’ve been able to sustain ourselves and we’re in a good local position.”
