in water pools or hanging over terraces and balconies. In the case of the former the pots can rest upon a shelf formed by project

ing the wall of a house till it evens with the sides of the coverlet. When they are hung, the pots should be fastened to the

rail by three or four strong wire chains. For climbers, with woody or other rigid stems, small trellises may be formed, made

of bamboo canes, wire netting, stout cord, or wooden slats. They are either triangular in section, like the prism of a conserva

tory, or constricted in the centre like the hips of a roof. When trellises are suspended in the manner of balconet

demités, as in fig. 14, a series of slats of an inch thick, and about 2 ft. wide, should be nailed across the top, and a couple

of feet from the bottom, to afford a support for the pots. Of the three figures given in the illustration, one represents a trellis

for climbers with wiry stems (a); another, a trellis for those with woody stems (b); the third, a sloping trellis (c) for plants

the pendants of which, such as are met with in Saxifraga sarmentosa, Rhoeo discolor, and similar plants, would be lost

sight of, or destroyed, if suspended in a vertical or upright position. The larger trellises can be carried nearly up to the roof of

a house, and a series of hanging baskets may be disposed among the lines close to the surface of the roof, which will serve

for the reception of annuals, of halfshrubby plants, and more robust species of Ferns.

Fig. 14— Hanging Trellises.

No. 15 is a detail of one of the hanging baskets, which are formed of wire netting, the sides of which are perforated to

admit of their being fixed to the frame. The baskets may, if preferred, be suspended by means of a chain, as in fig. 16.

Hanging baskets may be attached to the walls of a house, slightly brought forward, as in figs. 17 and 18. The
